The Story Behind Hunter & Hare: Building a Sustainable Fashion Community Since 2014
Hunter & Hare began as a vision in 2014, born from co-founders Micki and Jo’s shared passion for sustainable fashion and their deep concern over the fashion industry’s waste. With years of experience in retail and fashion, they witnessed firsthand the cycle of excess and knew there had to be a better way. In their spare time, they poured energy into developing the idea for Hunter & Hare—a space where quality secondhand fashion could shine and where community would be at the heart of every sale.
The journey began with a modest shop of less than 800 square feet on West Pender Street in Vancouver. Jo and Micki stocked it with carefully curated, good-condition pieces from friends and family, driven to make sustainable fashion accessible to everyone. A local Facebook page helped spread the word, and soon enough, Hunter & Hare became a beloved destination for affordable secondhand treasures.
The foundation of Hunter & Hare was built on four key pillars: community, collaboration, charity, and consignment. These values guided the brand from day one and remain at the core of everything we do, even as we’ve grown and evolved over the years.
Expanding with Purpose: From Pender Street to North Vancouver
In 2016, we opened our second location on Union Street, embracing Vancouver’s thriving Chinatown neighborhood. By 2019, with a loyal community behind us, we expanded to North Vancouver’s Lower Lonsdale—just before the world would change with the onset of COVID-19. The pandemic challenged us in many ways, and in 2020, we made the difficult decision to close our original Pender Street shop. Yet, we remained committed to our mission, opening a hybrid store on Main Street that welcomed not only women’s consignment but also baby and toddler clothing—a reflection of the evolving needs of our community.
A Growing Team, a Growing Vision
What started as a small shop operated by Jo and Micki has now blossomed into three thriving locations and a team of nearly 30 dedicated members. We’re more than just a consignment store; we’re a movement toward a sustainable, mindful approach to fashion, bolstered by our wholesale jewelry line that complements our mission.
As Hunter & Hare celebrates its ten-year journey, we’re excited for the road ahead. Through every expansion, every new member of our community, and every item consigned, our commitment to sustainable fashion remains steadfast. We invite you to be a part of our story—whether by visiting one of our Vancouver locations, shopping our curated collections online, or joining us in our pursuit of a more sustainable world.
